Dunedin Statue
The Dunedin statue was unveiled on the Queen's birthday, 24th May 1887 and is an exact replica of the New York figure, standing on a pedestal of Peterhead granite at the top end of the Octagon, the little square at the very centre of the 'Edinburgh of the South Pacific'.
That Dunedin should be the first city in New Zealand to honour the bard was hardly surprising, as Dunedin owed its very foundation to the Rev. Dr Thomas Burns, son of Gilbert, and thus a nephew of the poet. The unveiling ceremony was actually performed by Miss Burns, a great-grand-niece of Robert.
See the other Sir John Steell statues in New York, Dundee and London.
